Vertical Video Reframing: 9:16 Without Bad Crops

Vertical reframing is not simply cropping a 16:9 video until a face fits inside 9:16. The frame has to preserve whatever visual information makes the clip understandable: a person, a screen, a chart, a product, a second speaker, gameplay, or a moving action.

Decide what the viewer must see

Before choosing a crop, identify the meaning-bearing visual. In an interview it may be the current speaker. In a reaction clip it may be both people. In a tutorial it may be the interface. In a sports or gaming clip it may be the action rather than the commentator.

That decision is more useful than a rule that every vertical clip should center the largest face.

A crop has to work for the whole timeline

Automatic reframing can look correct at the first frame and drift into a problem later when the subject moves, a second speaker enters, or the video cuts to a screen. Review several points in the timeline and watch the full export before approving it.

Moving footage deserves more attention than a static talking head because the important object can leave the crop in a fraction of a second.

Use split or stacked layouts when one crop cannot work

Screenshares, two-person conversations, demos, and gameplay often need more than one region visible. A stacked layout can keep the speaker and source material on screen together. A temporary zoom can make a chart or UI legible without sacrificing the rest of the clip.

Use these layouts selectively; dividing the screen too often can make everything small.

Avoid face-filling zooms by default

Vertical video already creates a tighter frame. Pushing every face to the edges of the screen can feel claustrophobic and leaves no room for captions or visual context.

Leave enough negative space for the speaker to move naturally and for text to sit without covering eyes, mouths, or gestures.

Protect source graphics

Lower thirds, charts, subtitles, product labels, and interface text may be essential to the clip. If the crop removes them, either rebuild the graphic for vertical or change the composition so the original remains readable.

A beautiful vertical edit that hides the evidence is still a bad edit.

9:16 is common, not mandatory

Shorts, Reels, and TikTok are strongly associated with 9:16, but other placements may support square or landscape assets. If a visual loses too much meaning in a narrow frame, keep a wider version for destinations where it works better.

The source should serve the viewer, not a preset.

Make future recordings easier to reframe

If repurposing is part of the plan, record with vertical crops in mind. Keep speakers away from extreme edges, enlarge important screen content, avoid placing key text at the bottom, and leave enough central space to support a narrower composition.

Small production choices upstream can remove hours of reframing work later.
